Request for Proposals for MANCC's Free to Rep with Limón Dance Company

The Maggie Allesee National Center for Choreography (MANCC) is requesting proposals from choreographers interested in working with the Limón Dance Company through MANCC’s “Free to Rep” program February 3-16, 2008, in Tallahassee, FL.

MANCC’s Free to Rep program provides subsidized research and development time for U.S. based repertory companies and choreographers who have not previously worked together.  The primary goal of the two week program is to encourage artistic exploration in a supportive environment void of the usual time and financial constraints surrounding many commissioning structures. A final work is not an expectation of this program.

The Limón Dance Company, one of the world’s great modern dance companies, features a repertory both steeped in the legacy of José Limón, and a repository of dances by over 60 contemporary choreographers. As such, the company illustrates the timelessness of José Limón’s work and vision, while offering a repertory of unparalled breadth. Founded in 1946 by José Limón and Doris Humphrey, the Company is now led by Carla Maxwell, who worked closely with Limón before becoming Artistic Director in 1978.  For the Free to Rep program, Maxwell is particularly interested in working with mid-career artists who will embrace the company’s commitment to process, and enjoy working with a new palette of artistry.

Three choreographers who have not previously worked with the Limón Dance Company will be selected based on the following criteria;  1) artistic excellence, 2) regional or national significance, 3) potential impact on participants, and 4) clear understanding of Free to Rep opportunity.  Once selected, choreographers will receive airfare, lodging and rental car for duration of residency, and a stipend of $4,000.

Interested choreographers are asked to submit a one page statement of interest, an application form, two artistic references, video sample, and a bio/press kit.  Deadline for submissions is September 3, 2007.

Participating choreographers will be announced in October 2007.
