FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
December 12, 2005

BESSIE AWARD WINNING CHOREOGRAPHER AT FLORIDA STATE UNIVERSITY’S MAGGIE ALLESEE NATIONAL CENTER FOR CHOREOGRAPHY
________________________________________________________

TALLAHASSEE, FL – Bessie Award winning choreographer and performing artist Yasuko Yokoshi will host a company showing of her latest work-in-progress in the Black Box in Montgomery Hall at Florida State University on Thursday, December 15, 2005 from 5-7 P.M.

The piece, “what we when we,” is an evening-length multidisciplinary dance work, created in collaboration with Masumi Seyama, master teacher of Kanjyuro Fujima style traditional Japanese Kabuki.  “what we when we”  is Yokoshi’s appropriation of the highly exclusive Kabuki art form, and her application of it to contemporary dance.  The work will premiere in Spring 2006 at Danspace Project in New York City.

During the December 15th showing at Florida State University, Yokoshi’s company will also present traditional Japanese Kabuki dance repertories on which it has intensively trained during its residency at Seyama Dance School in Tokyo in November 2005.   Joining the company for the duration of this fellowship is Kuniya Sawamura, apprentice to master Kabuki teacher Masumi Seyama. This is an extremely rare opportunity to view a presentation of Kabuki in such an intimate setting outside of Japan.  Brief questions and answers to follow. Seating is limited and reservations are required. For more information, visit www.mancc.org <http://www.mancc.org>  or call (850) 645-2894.

This presentation follows Yokoshi’s appearance at the FSU Department of Dance Forum, during which Yokoshi gave a brief discussion of her work, and guest artist Kuniya Sawamura gave a short presentation of Kanjyuro Fujima style Kabuki.

This showing is a part of the Maggie Allesee National Center for Choreography’s Choreographic Fellowship program.  Fellows for the 2005-06 year include Jill Sigman/thinkdance (NY), Yasuko Yokoshi (NY), KT Niehoff/Lingo dancetheater (WA), Adia Whitaker/Ase Dance Collective (NY) and Benjamin Levy/LEVYdance (CA).

The Maggie Allesee National Center for Choreography is a program of the Department of Dance at Florida State University’s College of Visual Arts, Theater and Dance.
