Announcing 2008 Free to Rep Choreographers with Limón Dance Company

The Maggie Allesee National Center for Choreography (MANCC) Announces Participating Choreographers in Free to Rep program with Limón Dance Company

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
October 5, 2007

TALLAHASSEE, FL – Choreographers Colin Connor (CA), Ellen Cornfield/Cornfield Dance (NY), and Neta Pulvermacher/The Neta Pulvermacher Dance Company (NY) have been selected to spend two weeks working with the Limón Dance Company in February, 2008 at MANCC on the Florida State University campus.  The three choreographers were selected from applicants across the country interested in working with Limón Dance Company in a research laboratory environment as part of a MANCC program entitled Free to Rep.

Carla Maxwell, Artistic Director of the Limón Dance Company states, “we are thrilled to participate in this program, and humbled by the number of strong applicants in this country and abroad interested in working with the Limón Dance Company.  I was particularly interested in working with mid-career artists for this opportunity and feel our finalists represent a broad range of artistry.  While our list of finalists were limited to three, our list of prospective choreographers continues to increase through this process.”

MANCC’s Free to Rep program provides subsidized research and development time for U.S. based repertory companies and choreographers who have not previously worked together.  The primary goal of the two-week program is to encourage artistic exploration in a supportive environment void of the usual time and financial constraints surrounding many commissioning structures.  The 2007 Free to Rep program paired AXIS Dance Company (CA) with choreographers Isabel Croxatto (Chile), Shinichi Iova-Koga (CA), Alex Ketley (CA), and Kate Weare (NY).  The 2006 Free to Rep program paired PHILADANCO with choreographers Anouk Van Dijk (Netherlands), Bridget Moore (NY), Uri Sands (MN) and Takehiro Ueyama (NY).

The Limón Dance Company, one of the world’s great modern dance companies, features a repertory both steeped in the legacy of José Limón, and a repository of dances by over 60 contemporary choreographers. As such, the company illustrates the timelessness of José Limón’s work and vision, while offering a repertory of unparalled breadth. Founded in 1946 by José Limón and Doris Humphrey, the Company is now led by Carla Maxwell, who worked closely with Limón before becoming Artistic Director in 1978.

MANCC (pronounced man-see) is a national research and development center for dance located in Tallahassee, Florida, that shares dance facilities with the Department of Dance on the Florida State University campus.  Facilities include seven large dance studios, a 400-seat theater, black box, audio lab, computer and media lab, classrooms, offices, dressing rooms and conditioning studio for dancers.  For more information on MANCC and upcoming artists, please visit www.mancc.org.
