Work in Development: Tyler Tyler (2009)

In 2009 Yokoshi furthers this investigation in a new work which aims to respect formal movement vocabulary, while experimenting with stripping the historical and cultural context. With the American cast, Yokoshi will apply a postmodern vocabulary to the scale and structure of the Kabuki-style choreography. With the traditional Japanese performers, who have all trainted for many years with Seyama, she will explore the effect of contemporary choreographic techniques on their Kabuki forms. The 2009 DTW partnership project has been supported in part by the National Endowment for the Arts.
During Yasuko's 2005 Choreographic Fellow residency for the research and development for what we when we, Yokoshi began her unique collaboration with her revered master teacher of Kabuki Su-odori dance, Masumi Seyama and was awarded a 2006 Bessie award for the work. Yokoshi conceptually questioned authenticity and ownership of culture, investigated power dynamics in gender and explored the multiple perspectives that shape the contemporary trans-cultural experience. The 2005 Collaborators were Ryutaro Ishikane, Eikazu Nakamura, Matsuhide Nakashima, Hiromi Naruse and Kuniya Sawamura [performers].
